>>Day 26 : Malware

Today, I had to make another project from the amazing foxnews website. They had a great little article about porn sites use of malicious code, or malware. What interested me about this particular use of malware was that the users put it on thier systems voluntarily so that they could look at the site. It was all explained in the user agreement, something that everyone should read before downloading software. So, I decide to make my own malware. You may download this program voluntarily. I won't force you. But, I can't be held responsible for how it affects you. If you're nervous about using this program, I offer this disclaimer:

it won't do anything bad. i don't know how to write a program to do anything bad. it won't do anything to your system. this program is malicious in the broader sense of the term malicious. it intends to cause harm, but only to your feelings, not to your computer.

Windows .zip file(unzip file and run malicious.exe). MacOSX file (i don't know what the deal is with Mac program. Unzip the file. There's a readme in there. Do what that says.) Link to article

>>Day 25 : Performance Art

Today was once again a Mike's choice. So, I decided to do a little bit of performance art. This is my explanation:

For the previous year of my life, I had a cell phone. That year of my life was one of the worst. It was terrible and I had that cell phone for all of it. That year is over and I smashed that phone with a hammer. The whole time I smashed that phone with a hammer, I thought of all the horrible phone calls I got on that phone, all the stupid text messages, every disappointing voice mail. I will never have to hear another person's voice on that phone ever again. I won't have to ignore someone's call or be ignored on that phone anymore. Every single horrible communication that went through that phone is gone forever. That phone no longer holds the memories of the past year. There is no phonebook, no inbox. That phone, which facilitated so much bad news, so many mistakes, is gone. That year and that phone brought me down every day. I will never hold that phone all night waiting for a call. That phone will never ring again. That phone will never show me no one called again. That phone will never sit in my pocket, silent. That phone is never going to let me say the wrong thing and that phone is never going to let anyone hurt me. No one will ever try to reach me on that phone ever again to tell me something I don't want to hear. No one will ever use that phone to ruin me for a year. That year is over. That phone is gone. I smashed that phone with a hammer.

I did it at about 1:30 p.m. in my apartment with a few of my friends watching. My friend Jose filmed the event and took pictures of my phone afterwards. Once I get the video squared away, I'll post that, but for now, you can look at what I did to my phone. link to photos

>>Day 24 : JAVA Applet

So today, I had to something with fox news, so I decided to create a little Java Applet. I'm pretty excited about this because this is the first time I've ever gotten php scripts to work with one of my Applets. Granted, what I made today is very simple, still, I'm psyched. Anyway, what's happening is that the applet is reading the html of foxnews' mainpage. It's also reading the byte data of that file which is determining the alpha value of the mark-up. link to applet (it takes a few seconds to get started...) link to foxnews

Today, I had to do something from digg's main page. I found a nice little post about an ironic crash. So, I decided to take ironic digital photographs. I'm not sure how well my definition of irony is.

Today was another day from fox news. This story involved Pennsylvania's state flag. So, I decided to make a composite of all the state flags from the state's that I lived in. Sort of like my own state flag. The states were Virginia, New York, and Vermont.

So today, I had to make something based on anything from foxnews.com. Since I'm back home for the holidays, I decided to make some t-shirts because my brother owns his own screenprinting shop. I designed and printing the t-shirts all by myself today. This is exciting because it's my first time ever screenprinting. Anyway, I picked an article about confiscated items at the airport.

>>Day 19 : Exquisite Corpse Portraits

So today was a Mike's choice. And I decided to do some collaborative portraits. This is an important thing because it marks the first occasion that I collaborated with someone on a project. I made this portraits with my brother Jim. We sort of tried to do these in the style of dadaist exquisite corpse writings. So, what we did was one person would draw a part of the portrait and then fold the paper so the next person couldn't see the other person's work.

Today was a nytimes day. So, instead of doing something based on a particular news piece, I decided to do something based on the paper itself. I'm pretty interested in the structure of the frontpage, so I deleted all content from the front page of the NY Times. This is the result. Link to image

>>Day 15 : Video Montage

Today I had to do something from DIGG's mainpage. I found an article about a man that got arrested and sentenced for having sex with his bicycle. Now the thing that gets me is that it's impossible to have sex with a bicycle. And I'm also interested in sexual fetishes that are so specific and intricate that there pornography passes online video depositories' (i.e. - youTube), Terms of Service. So, I made a little bicycle porn montage on eyespot; which is like youTube but you can do non-linear video editing of the clips you watch. Link to DIGG Post

Today was another Mike's choice. I found a great article about an endagered bear fighting a poacher. So, I decided to make my own bear mascot and make some desktop wallpaper with him on them. Today I had to do something based on Fox News' homepage. I found a great article about a man arrested how having a toad for hallucinogenic purposes. So, I decided to make some virgin psychedelic toads. These are just like the other toads except when you lick the back of them, it's just sugar. Today I had to make something from the latest livejournal posts. So, I made a sort of installation in my room about the post. I don't have a real camera so I had to take this picture with my camera phone. That's why it looks so terrible. I promise I'll get a better picture soon. Today, I had to make something from a digg post. I found a very interesting article what could be bought with the possible amount spent on the war in iraq. It was interesting. A lot about how we could spend the money on all sorts of stuff. So, today I had to use something from NY Times. I picked the obituary of Norman Mailer. I made one of my time-lapse pictures from a very infamous scene from Norman Mailer's film "Maidstone." I chose this because it showed his sort of melding of reality and fiction. I don't know if this fight was real or planned. So today was another one of Mike's choice. I got to make something on whatever I wanted. I decided to make some art about the young girl that just had multiple limbs removed. So, I made some art with my scanner. All of these images are raw from the scanner. I only resized them so they wouldn't be huge. Also, all of these images are made completely by me. >>Day 3 : Celebrity Portraits

Today I had to create something involving the amazing Star Magazine home page. By the way, Star is very tech savvy. One even can subscribe to their StaRRS feed (which is the best Web 2.0 pun in history). I decided to do sort of quantitative portraits involving the first celebrities mentioned on the homepage news section. So, I searched each celebrities name in Google to see how many pages mentioned the celebrity. Then, I used that number to determine an amount of time (i.e. 2,450,000 pages equals 2 minutes, 45 seconds). That was the amount of time I had to spend on each portrait. The more popular the celebrity is on the internet, the more time I would spend on their portrait. Link to portraits

Official Start!!! >>Day 1: Memos

Today is the official start of my project. The random thing selected digg as the site to use. I found this article about a comcast memo that got leaked. I read the memo and everything. It seemed standard. So, I decided to write a memo for the closest thing to a business that I'm involved in. Antilogy Design Set is a t-shirt company that me, my brother, and our friend Ryan run.
